Curaduría: María Toro

Levantar la liebre, is a common expression within hunters, that eludes to how they browse the land waiting for the hidden piece to jump right into the hunter’s shot. In this exhibit, the phrase, as a metaphor of the photographic act, is used as to be aware about discovering something hidden about-to-be revealed in a spontaneous or premeditated way, in which that hidden thing corresponds to the pictures that jump right into the photographer’s shot.

These six proposals are structured from a series of personal stories, that inquire the tensions between reality (that which we never finish getting to know) and the photographic language (that which is constructed or fictionalized), to enter an emotional universe where photography in some cases uses unfocus, fragmentation, concealment, the minimalistic composition, or the poliptics of images that question the natural narrative properties of photography. In this way, an evasive reading is created, with no will to make a reproduction of reality like the sensations produced by our memory that after a while disappear or vanish. Or like in other cases, through the accumulation of a personal and untimed archive made parallel to the documentary work of the photographer, that permits the inclusion of itself in the project. Leaving behind the constant debate about real-life photography versus fictional photography, we can understand the photographic language as a form of life, autobiographical and reflexive, that doesn’t need necessarily previous experience in telling its interpretation of the world, with images that converse and associate with each other. These fractions of reality, disjointed, turn into metaphors that invite us to submerge in experiences or universes that drive through paths or fissures of what we so call reality.

In this sense, Levantar la liebre summons us to have a look, to gaze into the panorama, and rethink the place photography takes as a document.

Espacio el Dorado opens a space in its repertory with this project dedicated to inquire the photographic language. This piece is conformed by narratives build from personal stories that are incomplete and/or fragmented, real or fictitious, inserted in the drift, where the images transform into doors to those other realities inhabited by the photographers.

Reality has to be fictionized to be thought about.
